Harold grabbed Winnie by the throat as he said, “I’ve got an idea! How about we all die together? I’m

not just talking about you and me, though. I’m talking about everyone here! It’ll be slow and agonizing,

but you could try begging me to make it quick for you!”

Winnie had no idea what he meant by that.

Instead of explaining himself, Harold simply gave her a hard push.

Having been caught off guard, Winnie lost her balance and fell to the floor.

The next thing she knew, Harold had picked up the gun and tossed aside the four bottles of Alpha

radioactive gas.

“Have a taste of this radioactive gas! It’ll give these adorable children painful blisters before taking their

lives along with mine!” he screamed while glaring at the bottles with bloodshot eyes.

Those bottles were made out of special bulletproof glass, so they wouldn’t break even if they were shot

at. However, the radioactive gas still seeped through the tiny cracks in the glass bottles.

There were dozens of children and a few teachers inside that classroom, which was poorly ventilated.

Winnie couldn’t bring herself to imagine what would happen to the children if they were to breathe in

the radioactive gas.

The three SWAT officers were quick to react and carried the cracked bottles to the open field outside,

but they couldn’t stop the radioactive gas from leaking out.

Lisanne and her colleagues were wearing protective gear that protected them from toxic gases.

As they had tons of experience in handling radioactive gases, the SWAT officers handed the glass

bottles over to Lisanne and her colleagues upon request.

Because they were still in the process of researching that radioactive gas, they had no means of

confirming the damage it could do to humans. With no other choice left, they decided to carry the

cracked glass bottles inside their protective suits.

As long as their protective suits remained undamaged on the way back, they would be able to safely

transport the bottles of radioactive gas to the laboratory for analysis.

However, Winnie did not have the luxury of such safe options as one of the glass bottles rolled up to

her face.

I don’t have any protective equipment on, and this classroom is filled with children who are still growing

and developing! The eldest kid in the classroom is only ten years old! They all have bright futures and

unlimited possibilities ahead of them!

In the heat of the moment, Winnie quickly made a judgment call.

I may not have a protective suit, but I do have this body of mine! I could absorb all of this gas into my

body! Officer Clark previously mentioned that the radioactive gas could be used to treat cancer if used

properly, so I should be okay. Besides, Lisanne is doing it too! She’s researching this stuff, so she must

know what it can do to humans.

With that in mind, she grabbed the cracked glass bottle and held it up to her mouth.

Suddenly, someone reached over and tried to snatch the bottle out of her hand.

Winnie inhaled the gas while turning around to look at the person, only to realize that it was Xavier.

Not wanting to let Xavier risk his life for her again, she clutched the bottle tightly and rolled away from

him.

Fortunately, Lisanne and her colleagues rushed over in time.

They dispersed the crowd in the classroom and took care of the glass bottle in Winnie’s hands as

quickly as possible.

Winnie wasn’t sure if it was because of her exhaustion or her inhaling of the radioactive gas, but she

found herself starting to get dizzy.

The next thing she knew, she felt Xavier carry her in his arms and kiss her on the lips.

As much as she loved Xavier’s kisses, she feared the potential consequences of kissing him after

inhaling the radioactive gas.

“No! Stay away from me!” she exclaimed while pushing against his chest, but Xavier ignored her and

kissed her anyway.

“I hate you! I can’t believe you left me behind and came here all by yourself! I’m not going to trust you

ever again! From now on, you will only do as I say!”

“What happened to Harold?” Winnie asked groggily.

“He was shot dead.”

“All right, then… Let’s head home…”

Winnie was inside a quarantine room by the time she woke up.

Lisanne was resting in the room next to hers at the time.

She quickly grabbed the phone next to the bed when she saw that Winnie was awake.

A few seconds later, the phone next to Winnie started ringing.

Winnie had wanted to get out of bed, but her limbs were so sore that she couldn’t even sit up straight.

She had no choice but to answer the phone while lying down. “Hello?”

“Hey, Winnie. It’s me, Lisanne. How are you feeling right now?” Lisanne asked as she was concerned

about Winnie’s condition.

Winnie’s voice was weak, as she still felt a little feverish. “My tummy hurts. Where am I? How long

have I been unconscious? I feel like I’ve been out for ages.”

“Not too long. You were only unconscious for a little over a day. I’m glad you came to so soon! I’ll have

a doctor come over right away. You sustained some internal injuries, so you need to be given proper

treatment,” Lisanne said.

“What time is it? Why is it so dark in here?” Winnie asked while glancing about.

“It’s eleven at night. The light switch is on the wall behind you if you’d like to turn on the lights.”

Winnie tried reaching for it but gave up after a while as her body was too weak to do much.

“Forget it. The doctor will be coming over soon anyway, so I’ll just let them get it for me. By the way,

where’s Xavier? Do you know where he is?”

“He’s been watching over you since you were brought here. You see that chair outside? That practically

belongs to him alone. I think he just went to the bathroom or something. Who would’ve thought you’d

wake up while he’s away? I bet he’ll be filled with regret when he comes back and sees you like this.

You have no idea how guilt-ridden he was when he carried you here. He kept mumbling about not

listening to you ever again. I’m not sure if you heard him, though.”

Winnie let out a soft chuckle. “So, that explains why I heard a buzzing noise in my ears.”

“Yeah. You two can have a little chat when he gets back. I’ll have them summon the doctor,” Lisanne

said as she made a phone call.

The doctors arrived a few minutes later with Xavier, who had just heard that Winnie was awake.

They all donned protective suits before entering the quarantine room.

Xavier held Winnie’s hand the moment he saw her. “You’re finally awake!” he exclaimed with reddened

eyes.

Winnie gently pushed his hand off as she said, “Don’t touch me just yet. You’re all here, so why aren’t

you guys turning on the lights?”

The look on Xavier’s face changed the moment he heard that. Huh? What is she saying? The lights in

the room are clearly switched on!
